I was soon seeing doctors and podiatrists as I thought my feet were the cause. Apparently my left foot was collapsing in and rolling when I ran-this was putting pressure on the medial side of the leg...
The orthotics I was given helped for a period of time, but even at this early stage I could tell that the pain was not going away that easy...
Three months later I was still spending half my week in the local physiotherapist and was becoming desperate. I had a regional team cross country event looming that I was not going to miss no matter what...
Shin Splints were really starting to get to me now. I had even altered my training schedules so I was running less frequently and not training mid week. But motivation to keep going was waining - I really felt why keep all this up if I can not stop it hurting?
By this stage I was undertaking some work experience with the local Physiotherapist. I had commenced a physiology degree and wanted a career in the field. I decided I wanted to help active people overcome their injuries.
One day I was running a quick 3 mile time trial by myself and BANG! Excruciating pain through my shins that stopped me dead in my tracks. I was only about 500m into the time trial and could not continue. I was almost at a crawl on the way home. Worse still, I knew exactly what it was and I just wanted to quit altogether.
I had a race in 10 days and I was out. I informed the organisers and I no longer cared - enough was enough!
To this stage I had tried:-
Months of physiotherapy treatment
Visiting local doctors and podiatrists
Altering my training
Constant use of ice packs
Strength training, stretching and shin splint exercises
Painkillers and natural remedies

Just when I was about to give up, something remarkable happened! I met another therapist at the clinic who told me he treated marathon runners so they could continue to race. He invited me to learn some of his technique.
He was a bit older than the other physiotherapists from our clinic and more willing to help. I walked to his clinic with my shins absolutely killing me and hopeing to pick up some techniques for myself. By this time I had lost a lot of my fitness, along with any desire I had left to exercise.

Just though I would let you know how the Great Wales 10km Run went on Sunday. It was my first and the shin splint appears not to have affected my race. I clocked 46.53 which I was pleased with!
